IRON - SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF DEFICIENCY

IRON - SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF DEFICIENCY

Iron deficiency occurs when your body does not have enough of the mineral iron. Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that allows it to transport oxygen around the body.

If your body does not have enough hemoglobin, your tissues and muscles will not get enough oxygen to function effectively. This leads to a condition called anemia. Although there are different types of anemia, iron deficiency anemia is the most common worldwide.

Signs of iron deficiency may include the following:

  • Abnormal fatigue
  • Pale skin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitation
  • Hair loss and poor hair quality
  • Swelling and tenderness in the tongue and mouth
  • Crawls in the legs
  • Fragile or spoon-shaped nails
